Word Study For Today: The Book of Amos Chapter 4

Devotion: RECOGNISE IT!

Text: Luke 19:1-10. | Genesis 21:14-19. | Luke 19:41-44.

Opportunity may not always be yours even though it flies in the air always. It seldom passes the street of your house labelled as opportunity though it’s hawked like everyday.  Opportunity does not announce itself. It takes an unusual ability to recognise it when it’s passing.

A song says “pass me not o gentle Savior…”. Opportunity appears as a gentle subtle savior often, it rarely is a loud noise maker. On the blessed day that Jesus Christ chose to pass through the city of Jericho, it was like any other day He had moved into or through any other neighbourhood. There wasn’t any physical thing to suggest to Zacchaeus, that the fateful day was His day[his moment in time]. He probably didn’t  even know the ‘weight’ the person everyone lined the road to see ‘carried’ (His significance and importance). He only wanted also to see what was going on, and his height was going to fail him; suddenly the instinct in him set to work >>> get a vantage position so you can see Who they all are craving to see. Many lined the street to see Jesus but Zacchaeus recognised an opportunity  that could make him see Jesus > >Luke 19:3-4 (NCV)==>3)“He wanted to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because he was too short to see above the crowd. 4)He ran ahead to a place where Jesus would come, and he climbed a sycamore tree so he could see him.”

Not only was it his opportunity to see Jesus physically, it turned out to be his life time opportunity to see the salvation of the Lord in the land of the living. >Luke 19:5, 9 (NCV)==>5)“When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! I must stay at your house today.” 9)Jesus said to him, “Salvation has come to this house today, because this man also belongs to the family of Abraham.”

Wow! Others caught a glimpse of Jesus, but never recognised that moment in time as salvation time. For Zacchaeus, opportunity came knocking and he didn’t miss it because he gave his life to Jesus that day, he opened the door of his home and effectively his heart to Jesus. When you see it can you RECOGNISE IT?

The scripture records a tribe who was extremely sensitive to times and seasons. For every time or season that showed up, they were able to RECOGNISE IT[they knew what was best to do, they knew how to position and take advantage of each passing moment with the opportuned time frame]. What a tribe! >1 Chronicles 12:32 (NLT)==>“From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.”

Women are very emotional set of people, so little wonder Hagar was beclouded by tears of frustration when the water in her baby’s bottle was running out. She was sensitive enough as to know what to do in that condition. She had allowed the thought of ‘in the midst of no where in a wilderness’ to overwhelm her and all she saw was death and nothing more. Opportunity was not only a passerby on this day in Hagar’s life, opportunity was stationed around her and it could have even turned her to a merchant in and from the wilderness, yet she couldn’t RECOGNISE IT. It’s a sad story for all you need to be around you and yet not know or see it. >Genesis 21:19 (AMP)==>“Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the [empty] skin with water and gave the boy a drink.”.

It takes God to help man to RECOGNISE IT. It’s not naturally in man except the Lord puts it there or bestows it in the moment in time it’s needed like He did to Hagar. A well(opportunity for water supply) was around in the wilderness of Beersheba, yet she sat somewhere close but couldn’t see(smell it, pick it ). Her eyes had to be opened to see and RECOGNISE IT[because many do see, but only a few recognise the potential or essence of what they see].

Inability to recognise is a very dangerous state to be. A life that can’t recognise opportunity is in danger says Jesus Christ. >Luke 19:41-44 NCV)==>41) “As Jesus came near Jerusalem, he saw the city and cried for it, 42)saying, “I wish you knew today what would bring you peace. But now it is hidden from you. 43)The time is coming when your enemies will build a wall around you and will hold you in on all sides. 44)They will destroy you and all your people, and not one stone will be left on another. All this will happen because you did not recognize the time when God came to save you.”

Beloved, the race is not to the swift says the preacher >“Again I saw under the sun that— the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor food to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge; but time and chance happen to them all.”[Ecclesiastes 9:11 MEV].

Life is a game of time, and the ability to recognise the chance that has presented itself within that time frame(opportuned time). Jesus said “I wish you knew” what today will bring your way, the door it will open up for you, a life time chance of peace you can avail like Zacchaeus. He said destruction looms when you can’t sense it nor RECOGNISE IT.

Prayer Action:

-Worship the Lord in the beauty of His Holiness.

-Pray in the Spirit for 15 minutes.

-Cry out to the Lord this day, to open your eyes to see and recognise like He did for Hagar.

-Pray for sensitivity that you may not loose any single opportunity that is yours any more.

  • THE RACE IS NOT TO SWIFT, TIME AND CHANCE HAPPENS TO ALL.
