Word Study For Today: The Book of Amos Chapter 3

Devotion: WAKE UP! SERVE!

Texts: Acts 6:1-7. | Luke 22:24-30. | Exodus 23:25.

It is a blessed and sacred thing to find oneself in the service of the Lord God Almighty.

Many have assumed it’s a joke, a freewill initiative; but oh no, it’s not. No one takes the honor unto himself of serving God in His household. It is indeed an appointment of God>“I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,”[1 Timothy 1:12 ESV].

God enables service in His house, by giving strength to those whom He has judged faithful to work for Him. In other words, God is the Employer of those whom you find working in His organization. He might be an invisible Boss, yet He knows each one to every detail; He deploys each one according to His knowledge of him to serve Him in the capacity He deems fit. >“There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.”[1 Corinthians 12:5 NLT].

There are many avenues via which people can serve and actually do serve(they are so numerous and past what can be imagined) for God had carved out diverse areas of service, but the bottomline is that God is the same and Only God we all come to serve through our various giftings and departments. No one person should ever feel more important than the other. Service is as appointed by God> “He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of the Lord’s temple.”[2 Chronicles 35:2 NIV].

The Human Resources department of heaven appointed each one to serve as appropriate, therefore there is no superior service or servant. Zechariah had a division in which he served God, despite his age. And whenever it was time for his department to serve he showed up; till their turn is over, he never goes home. >8)“Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,23)When his time of service was completed, he returned home.”[Luke 1:8, 23 NIV].

Scripture says >7)“Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 8)Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.”[Ephesians 6:7-8 NLT].

Serving in the Kingdom is not service unto any man(though you physically work with and serve men); it is pure service unto God. Therefore >“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,”[Luke 12:35 NIV].

Let everyone appointed truly and duly engage in service. Don’t lord it over anyone. Everyone should set hand on the flow. >…let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.” 27)“For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.”[Luke 22:26 &27 ESV].

Jesus is our perfect example. He served, never lorded it over His people. He served them, He washed their feet, He went everywhere they went. No one deserves a leadership role without true and visible service. Wake-up! Serve!

Do not serve as men pleasers but serve genuinely as one serving God and not man. Take eye and lip service out of your path. Let it be no game you indulge in. >Ephesians 6:6-7 (ESV)==> 6)“not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7)rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,”.

Serve God and Him only dedicate your life to serve. >”No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”[Matthew 6:24 ESV].

>15)“You know that Stephanas and his household were the first of the harvest of believers in Greece, and they are spending their lives in service to God’s people. 16)I urge you, dear brothers and sisters, to submit to them and others like them who serve with such devotion.”[1 Corinthians 16:15-16 NLT].

Serve with devotion, serve fervently. Don’t toy with the privileged opportunity of serving God. Remember beloved, it’s an appointment by God. It’s not a free initiative as it has been painted[voluntary service]; except the Lord has appointed you unto His service you cannot volunteer yourself. Do not therefore loose the favour with God before you realize what you had. Wake up!

>“Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”[Luke 9:62 NIV].

Looking back, slacking, toying, joking on God’s assignment disqualifies you from service. God’s work is such as to be taken so so seriously. Paul said in serving God he was ready to loose his life, for serving God is an offering. He already saw himself as an offering to God. >“But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy.”[Philippians 2:17 NLT].

>”For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.”[Philippians 2:30 NLT]. Whilst some are full of excuses in the place of service, others have understood that service to God is ace and even if it will cost their lives, they are sold out and ready to give it as an offering.

Wake up!

Serving God is not a trivial matter >“is it too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do service in the tabernacle of the Lord and to stand before the congregation to minister to them,”[Numbers 16:9 ESV].

Take service as it rightly is, a service unto God. God is faithful, Who will never overlook your labour. >“For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”[1 Timothy 3:13 ESV]. >“You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.”[Exodus 23:25 ESV].

>14)“And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15)He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him.”[Matthew 8:14-15 ESV].

You shall not loose your reward. WAKE UP! SERVE!
